Leigh Fylstra Blalock, M.D.Dr. Blalock is a graduate of the Duke Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Program as well as the Duke Adult Psychiatry program. She is experienced in comprehensive diagnostic assessments of children and adolescents, incorporating special attention to developmental issues and individual needs. She is trained in the treatment of all psychiatric issues, and specializes in evidence-based treatment of a wide variety of psychiatric disorders, including attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), separation anxiety, social anxiety, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), depression, bipolar disorder, autism spectrum disorders, and adjustment disorders. She has expertise in both medication treatments as well as psychotherapy, including training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness-based techniques, Motivational Interviewing and Family Therapy.
Dr. Blalock is originally from Charleston, South Carolina. She completed undergraduate education at Vanderbilt University and earned a degree in English Literature. She earned her medical degree in Charleston at the Medical University of South Carolina. She completed five years of training in adult, child and adolescent psychiatry at Duke Medical University. Dr. Blalock was the Chief Resident for the Duke Child and Families Studies Center Family Therapy program in 2010 as well as the Chief Resident for the Duke Psychosocial Treatment Clinic in 2011.
Dr. Blalock enjoys working with children, parents and school systems on issues related to academics, disruptive behaviors, and social situations. Additionally, she aids in advocating with parents to ensure children receive the services they need from schools to maximize their potential. She also enjoys working with teenagers on the particular struggles that accompany adolescence, including conflict with parents, romantic relationships, peer struggles, substance abuse, disordered eating, academic concerns, self-image and identity. She has particular interest in working with families to help problem-solve ways to improve communication and support for each other to increase the likelihood of success. Dr. Blalock has a collaborative aim in treatment planning to ensure that treatment is tailored to meet the individual goals of the child, teen and parents. She is sensitive to cultural and spiritual issues and incorporates a warm, nonjudgmental and accepting therapeutic style in all treatment modalities. |
